Frequently Asked Questions
How far back can I query historical vessel positions?
Our Historical Vessel Location API provides access to up to 2 years of position history. Query using from_date and to_date parameters in ISO 8601 format. See the API reference for details.
What data is included in each position record?
Each position record includes lat, lon, course, speed, and time. This gives you complete navigation context for voyage reconstruction.
How do the date parameters work?
Use from_date and to_date parameters in ISO 8601 format (e.g., 2026-01-15T00:00:00Z). The API returns all available positions within your specified date range. See our API reference for detailed parameter documentation.
What is the maximum number of positions per request?
Each API request returns up to 3000 position records. For longer voyages, you may need to make multiple requests with different date ranges.
How is pricing calculated for historical data?
Historical data requests are priced at 5 credits per distinct date in the results. A 7-day query would cost 35 credits regardless of the number of positions returned. View our pricing page for full details.
What AIS coverage is available for historical data?
Historical position data is sourced from our terrestrial AIS network. Coverage is strongest in coastal waters, major shipping lanes, and port approaches where shore-based receivers provide comprehensive tracking.
What is the rate limit?
The Historical Vessel Data endpoint has a rate limit of 15 requests per minute. Each request can return up to 3000 position records.
